Additional Information

The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi first recognized Hindi as the national language in 1917.
But on 14 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly unanimously agreed to give it the status of an official language.
In 1950, by Article 343(1) of the Constitution, Hindi was given the status of official language in the form of Devanagari script.
Constitutional provisions related to official language have been made from Article 343 to 351 of the Constitution of the country.
The government has also formed the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
