- The indentured workers (known derogatively as 'coolies') were recruited from India, China, and from the Pacific and signed a contract in their own countries to work abroad for a period of 5 years or more.
- Many Indians agreed to become indentured laborers to escape the widespread poverty and famine in the 19th century.
- The Indian indenture system was a system of indentured servitude, by which more than one million Indians were transported to labour in European colonies, as a substitute for slave labor.
- The system expanded after the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1833, in the French colonies in 1848, and in the Dutch Empire in 1863. Indian indentureship lasted till 1920.
