Explanation:

Pipes can be connected in two ways. They are-

  • Flow through Parallel Pipes.
  • Flow through Series Pipes.

Series Pipes:

Pipes in series or compound pipes are defined as the pipes of different lengths, and different diameters connected end to end (in series) to form a pipeline.

RRB JE ME 45 13Q Full Test 1 Part 5-hindi - Final Diag(Deepak&Shashi) images Q10

Head loss in Series Pipe:

Total head loss is the summation of individual head losses in each pipe.

hf = hf1 + hf2

\(∴ {h_f} = \frac{{4{f_1}V_1^2}}{{2g{d_1}}} + \frac{{4{f_2}V_2^2}}{{2g{d_2}}}\)

Discharge in Series Pipe:

The rate of flow is the same in each pipe.

∴ Q = Q1 = Q2

Parallel Pipes:

The main pipeline divides into two or more parallel pipes which again join together downstream.

Head loss in Parallel Pipe:

It is same in both pipe and given by-

hf = hf1 = hf2

\(∴ {h_f} = \frac{{4{f_1}V_1^2}}{{2g{d_1}}} = \frac{{4{f_2}V_2^2}}{{2g{d_2}}}\)

Discharge in Parallel Pipe:

The rate of flow in the main pipe is the sum rate of flow in branched pipes.

∴ Q = Q1 + Q2
