Laminar Flow:
- Laminar flow is a flow in which liquid flows in layers, one layer sliding over the other. There is no mixing between different layers and thus, shear force is mainly due to the viscosity.
- The laminar flow occurs at low velocity so that the forces due to viscosity (viscous forces) predominates inertial forces.
- Viscosity gives rise to the shear stress. The resistance to the flow due to shear stress is overcome by the pressure gradient along the flow (pressure force).
Laminar Flow between two parallel plates:
The simplified form of the Navier-Stroke equation in the rectangular coordinate system is given by
\(\frac {d\tau_{yx}}{dy} = \frac{\partial p}{\partial x} = constant\)
So, Pressure force and viscous force are considered.
