Indian currency notes are printed in Nashik, Maharastra.
The two mills at Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh and Mysore, Karnataka design, produce and supply the paper on which currency is printed to printing presses.
Once the banknote paper has been embedded with security features, these are sent to the four printing presses and they add additional security features of optically variable ink.
Two of the currency note printing presses are owned by the Government of India and two are owned by the Reserve Bank, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Ltd.
The government-owned presses are at Nashik (Western India) and Dewas (Central India).
The other two presses are at Mysore (Southern India) and Salboni (Eastern India).
Coins are minted in four mints owned by the Government of India.
The mints are located at Mumbai, Hyderabad, Calcutta, and Noida.
The number of currency notes which are to be printed for each denomination is decided on the basis of projections for GDP growth rate, inflation, and electronic transactions. This data is called by 19 regional offices of the RBI.
