Mixture of 60 litres, ratio of milk and water = 2 ∶ 3

The desired ratio of milk and water = 1 ∶ 2

Concept:

We should find out the amount of water to be added to change the ratio of milk and water from 2 ∶ 3 to 1 ∶ 2.

Calculation:

In the mixture, quantity of milk = (2/5) × 60 = 24 litres 

⇒ For the milk and water to be in the ratio 1 ∶ 2,

⇒ Amount of water needed = 2 ×  quantity of milk

= 2 ×  24 = 48 litres

⇒ Amount of water to be added = 48 - (60 - 24) = 12 litres

Therefore, 12 litres of water must be added to make the ratio of milk and water 1 ∶ 2.
