Question
Download Solution PDFWhich of the following statements is/are correct/incorrect for the honeycomb soil structure?
Statement A: It is found in soils having sizes of 0.02 mm to 0.0002 mm.
Statement B: These soils enclosed a small volume of voids.
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFConcept:
Depending upon the effect of gravitation and surface electric forces during the formation of the soil structure, the following structure are formed:
- Coarse-grained or single-grained structure: Here particle size is greater than 0.02 mm and gravitational force is predominant than the surface electric forces.
- Honeycomb structure: When particle size is in between 0.02 mm to 0.0002 mm then both gravitational and surface electric forces are important.
- The grains coming into contact are held until miniature arches are formed, bridging over relatively large void spacing and forming a honeycomb structure.
- The structure so formed has large voids and is capable of carrying relatively heavy loads without excessive volume change.
Additional Information
- Flocculated structure: When the particle size is less than 0.0002 mm and electric forces are predominant but net deposit is under attractive force.
- Dispersed structure: When the particle size is less than 0.0002 mm and electric forces are predominant but net deposit is under repulsive force.
