  • To measure voltage, current is passed through a resistor.
  • This is known as the "voltage divider" principle, where a known resistance is placed in series with the circuit whose voltage is to be measured.
  • By measuring the voltage drop across the resistor using a voltmeter, the voltage of the circuit can be calculated using Ohm's Law.

  •  In series circuit, the current flowing through the circuit is same and the voltage is divided through all the elements in the circuit.
  • In parallel circuit, the voltage across each parallel branch is same and the current is divided between all the branches.
  • Thus, voltage divider is always a series circuit and current divider is always a parallel circuit.
