Intercooler:
- A turbocharger or supercharger is used to increase the volume of air entering the engine. It does so by compressing the air above atmospheric pressure. However, when air is compressed, it heats up. This causes the volume of the air to increase, lowering its density. Hot air under pressure in a cylinder contains fewer oxygen molecules than cooler air at the same pressure in the same volume.
- The purpose of an intercooler is to reduce the intake air temperature using fins. It can do so up to a few hundred degrees Fahrenheit before it enters the intake manifold. Decreasing air temperature increases the density of the pressurized air and improves engine efficiency. It also lowers the chance of engine-damaging detonation.
