Schmitt trigger

  • Schmitt trigger is a comparator circuit that works on positive feedback.
  • It has only two outputs either +V or -V.
  • +V is produced when input at the non-inverting terminal is greater than inverting terminal.
  • -V is produced when input at the non-inverting terminal is smaller than inverting terminal.
  • The purpose of the Schmitt trigger is to convert any regular or irregularly shaped input waveform into a square wave output voltage or pulse.
  • Thus, it can also be called a squaring circuit and can be used as a square wave generator.
  • A Schmitt trigger is a bistable multivibrator, and it can be used to implement another type of multivibrator, the relaxation oscillator.
  • This is achieved by connecting a single RC integrating circuit between the output and the input of an inverting Schmitt trigger.
