Tilting of rails:
Rails are tilted inward at an angle of 1 in 20 to reduce wear and tear on the rails as well as on the tread of the wheels. As the pressure of the wheel acts near the inner edge of the rail, there is heavy wear and tear on the rail.
The tilting of rails can be achieved by
(a) Adzing of sleepers
(b) Use of a canted base plate.
Advantages of tilting of rails:
- The wear of the rail head is uniform
- The gauge can be properly maintained
- Increase the life of rail and sleeper
Hence the tilting of rails is done to remove the defects (or demerits) of coning of wheels.
