Types of Triaxial Test on the basis of Drainage:
(i) Unconsolidated Un-drained (UU) Test:
- In this test expulsion of pore water is not permitted in both stages. It is used for clays in short-term analysis for clays under un-drained conditions at a fast loading rate
- Due to undrained conditions in both the stages, the ϕ does not get mobilized and gives 0 value, which can be verified by drawing Mohr failure envelope for UU test.
From the above graph, we can conclude the ϕ is 0, for UU. As ϕ is defined as the slope of failure envelope and here the slope of failure envelope is 0
(ii) Consolidated Drained (CD) Test:
- In this test expulsion of pore water is permitted in both stages.
- It is used for short-term and long-term stability analysis in saturated sands and long-term stability analysis in clays.
(iii) Consolidated Un-drained (CU) Test:
- In this test, the expulsion of pore water is permitted in 1st stage but not in the second stage.
- It is used for the investigation of the safety of the earthen dam which may occur due to the sudden drawdown of the water table.
