In October 2022, the Prime Minister of India initiated a significant scheme known as Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jana Urvarak Pariyojana. This scheme is an essential part of the UPSC syllabus and holds considerable importance for the IAS exam.
The term Urvarak is a Hindi word that translates to fertilisers. Ever since the advent of the green revolution , fertilisers have become the backbone of Indian agriculture, significantly boosting crop productivity. However, the excessive use of fertilisers by Indian farmers has led to increased soil salinity, groundwater pollution, and soil erosion. Hence, there is a pressing need for the judicious and scientific application of fertilisers.
As per the Department of Fertilisers, this scheme aims to implement “One Nation One Fertiliser (ONOF)”.
The scheme, however, has certain drawbacks.
Conclusion: The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jana Urvarak Pariyojana is expected to create awareness among farmers and provide services that could boost their productivity.
