In Maharashtra, there are 7 different types of forests, most of which are tropical and located near the Sahyadri mountains region.

As of the end of 2019–20, Maharashtra had 64579 sq km of forest, or about 20.1% of its total land area, compared to the target of 33.0% set under the National Forest Policy of 1988.

It is common to use the terms "forests" and "vegetation" interchangeably. Maharashtra has seven main types of forests, which are Tropical evergreen forests, Tropical semi-evergreen forests, and Subtropical evergreen forests, Tropical Moist Deciduous Forests or Tropical Monsoon Forests, Tropical deciduous forests, Tropical thorn forests and Coastal Mangrove Forest.

The maximum amount of forest cover in the Gadchiroli district is 68.81 per cent of its total area. According to the report, the Pune district has 10.94% forest cover.

Maharashtra has the highest amount of tree cover in the nation 26,866 sq km. outside of the Reserved Forest Area, followed by Odisha (24,474 sq km) and Karnataka.
