Frequently Asked Questions

We know that MMIX = MM + IX, MMIX = 2000 + 9, MMIX = 2009

First, we will write MMIX and MXXI in numbers, i.e. MMIX = 2000 + 9 = 2009 and MXXI = 1000 + 20 + 1 = 1021. Now, 2009 – 1021 = 988. And 988 = CMLXXXVIII. Therefore, CMLXXXVIII should be subtracted from MMIX roman numerals to get MXXI.

We know that in roman numerals, we write 9 as IX, and 1000 as M. Therefore, 2009 in roman numerals is written as MMIX = MM + IX = 2000 + 9 = MMIX.
