Students who clear JEE Main are eligible to appear in JEE Advanced. That is not the only difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Yes, both these exams have some differences although these two have a lot in common. JEE Main is the first step to IITs followed by the main entrance gate, which is JEE Advanced. Many of you may think and ask What is the difference between JEE Main and Advanced? And Why do we even have to bother about it? All these questions will be answered in this article. Below is a detailed explanation of these two examinations and their differences.

What is JEE Main?

JEE Main stands for Joint Entrance Examination Main, it is a national-level engineering entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to get admission to reputed institutes like the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs to pursue undergraduate courses.

What is JEE Advanced?

The JEE Advanced is a national-level undergraduate engineering entrance examination conducted by various IITs each year, this examination is taken by those students who have cleared the JEE Main.

The JEE Advanced is the gateway to get admission to the most prestigious engineering college in India, that is, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

Why should you know the difference between JEE Main and Advanced?

Since the JEE Main and the JEE Advanced both are different examinations but with a single goal, which is to provide admissions to reputed technical institutes like the IITs, NITs and others.

If you want to roam around the streets of London, you take aid from a map so that you don’t get lost.

Similarly, if your aim is IIT, then you must go through the “map” of these examinations. To prepare yourself for both the examination simultaneously, you must have adequate knowledge about them and the difference between them, this will help you to frame a study strategy.

Let us find the answer to a simple but very important question - What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

The difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) has two phases, namely the JEE Main followed by the JEE Advanced. Only the top 2.5 lakhs students who clears the JEE Main are eligible to take the JEE Advanced.

There are some differences between these two examination based on certain parameters.

Below are some parameters on the basis of which one can easily figure out and understand the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

Eligibility Criteria

The differences between jee main and advanced based on eligibility criteria are listed below.

  • JEE Main Eligibility Criteria: Anyone can register and appear for the JEE Main irrespective of their marks/grades. However, to get admission in the NITs, IIITs or GFTIs, one must have passed class 12 or equivalent examination with 75% or more (65% for SC or ST) or must be in the top 20 percentile in the class 12th examination.
  • JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria: Only the top 2.5 lakhs students who have cleared the JEE Main are eligible to take the JEE Advanced. For getting admission is IITs, one must have atleast 75% marks in class 12 or equivalent examination.

Admitting Institutes

  • JEE Main Admitting Institutes: Government institutes like the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTI) and some private colleges accept the JEE Main Rank to provide admission to their institute.
  • JEE Advanced Admitting Institutes: Prestigious institutes like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) and Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) accepts the JEE Advanced Rank to provide admission to their institutes.

Number of Attempts

  • JEE Main Number of Attempts: In the year 2018 and before, the JEE Main was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the examination was conducted only one time in a year. However, since the year 2019, the JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). A new system was introduced where the JEE Main was and is being held multiple times a year.
  • The JEE Main was held two times a year in 2019, that was in January and April.
  • The JEE Main was held two times a year in 2020, that was in January and September.
  • The JEE Main was held four times a year in 2021, that was in February, March, July and August (extended to September).
  • The JEE Main was held two times a year in 2022, that was in June and July.

A candidate can take the JEE Main a maximum of three consecutive times starting from the year of graduation from class 12 or other equivalent classes.

  • JEE Advanced Number of Attempts: In a year, only one attempt is given for the JEE Advanced. A total of two attempts are provided for the candidate to take the JEE Advanced starting from the year of graduation of class 12 or other equivalent classes. Since the first JEE Advanced, the number of attempts remains the same.

Marks Distribution

  • JEE Main Marks Distribution: The total achievable marks in the JEE Main is constant. Till the year 2019, the maximum obtainable marks was 360, however, since 2020, the total marks in JEE Main is 300. The total marks might have changed but for a particular year, it is contant.
  • JEE Advanced Marks Distribution: Unlike the JEE Main, there is a lot of turbulence in the total achievable marks in the JEE Advanced. Every year there is a change in the total number of marks.
  • 360 was the total marks in the year 2018.
  • 372 was the total marks in the year 2019.
  • 396 was the total marks in the year 2020.
  • 360 was the total marks in the year 2021.
  • 306 was the total marks this year, that is in 2022

Mode of Examinations and its Duration

  • JEE Main Mode of Exam and Duration: There are two papers where Paper - 1 is for B.Tech / B.E which is conducted in online mode, that is Computer Based Test (CBT). The Paper - 2 is for B.Arch/B.Planning which is conducted online except the Drawing part which is an offline (pen and paper) test. The candidates can either choose to give Paper - 1 or Paper - 2 or both. The duration for Paper - 1 is 3 hours and that of Paper - 2 is 3 hours and 30 minutes.
  •  JEE Advanced Mode of Exam and Duration: There are two papers, namely Paper - 1 and Paper - 2, both of these are conducted in online mode (Computer Based Test). Both the Papers are compulsory to take otherwise the candidate’s responses won’t be evaluated. Both papers are of 3 hours, a total of 6 hours is the duration of the JEE Advanced - 9 am to 12 noon (Paper - 1) and 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm (Paper - 2).

Examination Paper Pattern

  • JEE Main Paper Pattern: The paper consists of three sections, namely Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each section has 30 questions comprising of 20 Multiple Choice Questions that carries 4 marks each and 10 Numerical Type Questions that carries 4 marks each, only 5 out of those 10 Numerical Type Questions are to be answered. A negative mark of (-1) is awarded for incorrect answer. The total number of questions is 90, out of which only 75 are to be answered. The total obtainable marks is 75*4=300. The questions asked are more straightforward and formula based.
  • JEE Advanced Paper Pattern: There is no fixed paper pattern in JEE Advanced. The most probable question types are Multiple Choice, Multiple Selection, Match the Columns, Numericals, Assertion and Reason, and Comprehension. In the Multiple Select Type Questions, more than one options is correct and partial marking is awarded if some (but not all) marked options are correct. There is no fixed positive or negative marks in JEE Advanced, each year the marks distribution changes. Negative marks is awarded for each incorrect answer. Multiple concepts are blend together to frame a question hence is more trickier than that of JEE Main.

Difference in Syllabus

  • JEE Main Syllabus: Class 11th and 12th Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics NCERT-based syllabus. The question asked are of a level higher than that of the NCERT level.
  • JEE Advanced Syllabus: Same as JEE Main except for some chapters, these excluded chapters are -
  • Semi-Conductors, and Communication Systems for Physics.
  • Biomolecules and Environmental Chemistry for Chemistry.
  • Sets and Relations, Heights and Distances, Probability and Statistics, and

Mathematical Reasoning for Mathematics.

Difficulty Level and Qualifying Rate

  • JEE Main Difficulty Level: Comparatively easier with selection rate of 21% - 25%.
  • JEE Advanced Difficulty Level: Comparatively difficult with selection rate of 1.6%, since the seats have increased from 10,000 to 16,000. Earlier the selection rate was around 0.8%.
