The job of administrative officers in the West Bengal government is the dream of many students. The West Bengal Public Service Commission every year conducts the WB PCS exam to recruit the candidates to serve as administrative officers. It is an absolutely privileged opportunity for students to pursue as their career!

The WB PCS exam is a three level exam: Prelims, Mains and Interview. Candidates are supposed to clear all the levels. Out of all the papers in mains, it is necessary that you clear all the papers with a good score. Here it is the choice of the candidates to choose an optional subject. Choosing wisely is important because it will create a difference.

Our article is focused on the latest WBCS exam pattern, its syllabus, and every little detail about the Optional Subject. Candidates who are willing to appear for the mains exam are suggested to go through the detailed WBCS syllabus and exam pattern.

WBCS Pali Syllabus

Pali is again a language paper which is a part of Compulsory and Optional Subject. The notification of the syllabus of WBCS Pali Paper is out! For candidates reference, we have provided the complete syllabus of the WBCS Pali Exam.

Paper 1- Pali Paper
Candidates shall have to answer five questions taking at least one question from each group. Answers to questions on Group-B, Group-D and Unit 3 of Group-C must be written in Pali language either in Bengali or in Roman script. The remaining questions must be attempted in Pali or in Bengali or in English but in only any one of these languages.
PALI LINGUISTICS : Unit 1 – Concepts of Linguistics, Languages and Phonetic Laws.

Unit 2 – Concept of Homeland of Pali, Features of Pali, Pali as M.I.A., Pali & Sanskrit, Pali & Prakrits.

Unit 3 – Short notes on Phonetic Tendencies.

PALI GRAMMAR : Unit 1 – Sandhi, Samasa, Itthipaccaya.

Unit 2 – Karaka Vibhakti, Paccaya-Kita & Taddhita.

Unit 3 – Conjugation, Declension, Make Sentences.

TRANSLATIONS : Unit 1 – Pali to English (unseen passages from poetry) with grammatical notes on any two words.

Unit 2 – Pali to English (unseen passages from prose) with grammatical notes on any two words.

Unit 3 – English to Pali.

ESSAY IN PALI:  Essay in Pali consisting of 200 words on any one of the following topics:

Gotama Buddha, Tipiţaka, Dhamma – Vinaya, Sammāsambuddha, Paccekabuddha, Bodhisatta, Majjhima paţipadā, Ariyaaţţhangikamagga, Cattāriariyasaccāni, Dukkha, Paţiccasamuppāda, Nibbāna, Dukkhanirodhagāminīpaţipadā, Tilakkhana, Anicca, Anattā, Kammavāda.

Paper II- Pali Paper 
Candidates shall have to answer any three questions from Section -A and any two from Section-B. Answers of questions belonging to Section-B must be answered in Pali language in Bengali or in Roman script. The remaining three questions must be attempted in any one of the following three languages – Pali, Bengali, English.

History of Canonical Literature : Vinaya Pitaka, Suttapitaka & Abhidhammapitaka.
Non-Canonical Literature : Extra-Canonical (Anupitaka), Commentaries (Atthakathas), Vamsa Literature.
History of Early Buddhism : Pre-Buddhist India, Life of Buddha, Royal Patronage, Origin of Samgha.
Development of Buddhism : Buddhist Councils (1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th); Buddhist Schools and Sects; Spread and Decline of Buddhism

WBCS Pali Exam Pattern

After qualifying the Preliminary exam candidates will get an opportunity to appear for tier 2.

For the main exam, all the papers are important and conducted in descriptive mode. Total of six papers out of which two are optional. You can go through the exam pattern below:-

  • There will be two optional papers- Pali. 
    • Paper 1 – Pali Paper
    • Paper 2 – Pali Paper
