Social Security Scheme in India - In Brief

Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan Yojana (PM-SYM)

This voluntary and contributory pension scheme caters to unorganized sector workers aged between 18 and 40 years. Participants make a monthly contribution ranging from Rs. 55 to Rs. 200, depending on their age of entry, and the government contributes an equal amount. Upon reaching the age of 60, subscribers receive a monthly pension of Rs. 3,000.

National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS)

This scheme provides health insurance coverage to workers in the organized sector. The scheme covers hospitalization, outpatient care, and other medical expenses.

Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS)

This scheme provides financial support to eligible elderly individuals above the age of 60 years from below-poverty-line households. The pension amount varies depending on the state of residence, ranging from Rs. 200 to Rs. 500 per month.

Atal Behari Vajpayee Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)

This is also known as Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. This scheme provides health insurance coverage to approximately 500 million individuals from low-income households. It covers hospitalization and surgical expenses for a wide range of illnesses and procedures.

Mahila Shakti Kendra (MSK)

This scheme aims to empower women by providing them with access to various services. This includes financial support, skill development training, and employment opportunities. It focuses on women from marginalized communities. It promotes their social and economic well-being.

National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP)

This scheme provides financial support to individuals and families in need, including widows, disabled individuals, and orphans. It offers a range of benefits, including pensions, stipends, and scholarships.

National Food Security Act (NFSA) 

This act ensures food security for eligible households. It provides subsidized food grains through the public distribution system. It aims to address malnutrition and hunger among the vulnerable population.

What has Changed from the Code on Social Security 2019 bill to the 2020 bill?

The 2020 bill replaces many existing laws with a unified Code on Social Security. This is to streamline and simplify the social security system.

  • It expands the scope of social security coverage. It includes gig workers, platform workers, and other unorganized sector workers.
