What is Pradhan Mantri Vandana Yojana?

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, formerly known as the Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana, is a government of India initiative designed to provide maternity benefits. It was first introduced in 2010 and underwent a name change in 2017. The Ministry of Women and Child Development oversees this program.

Background of PMMVY

  • It’s a Maternity Benefit Program being implemented across the country per the 2013 National Food Security Act.
  • The direct benefit cash transfer is designed to help expectant mothers fulfill their increased nutritional needs while compensating them for lost wages while pregnant.
  • The scheme was announced on December 31, 2016. It is being implemented in all districts across the country as of January 1, 2017.

Objectives of PMMVY

Here are the objectives of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY):

  • To provide financial support to pregnant and lactating mothers to improve their nutritional status and well-being.
  • To reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.
  • To encourage institutional deliveries.
  • To promote exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life.
  • To improve the health and well-being of children under the age of six

Eligibility for PMMVY

The eligibility criteria for this program include the requirement that the applicant must be a woman. She should be pregnant and currently employed, facing a loss of wages due to her pregnancy. The applicant must be at least 19 years of age, and the scheme is applicable exclusively for the first live birth..

Beneficiaries of PMMVY

Here are the beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY):

  • All pregnant women and lactating mothers registered with the Anganwadi (community health center) in their area.
  • Pregnant or lactating women who are not already receiving benefits under any other government scheme.
  • Women willing to register for the PMMVY and provide their Aadhaar numbers.
  • Women who are willing to adhere to the terms and conditions of the PMMVY.

Advantages of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana

Beneficiaries will receive a cash benefit of Rs. 5,000 in three installments if they meet the following criteria.

  • It is important to register your pregnancy as soon as possible.
  • Examination of the mother during pregnancy
  • The birth of the child is registered, and the first immunization round for the family’s first living child is completed.
  • The Janani Suraksha Yojana also offers monetary benefits to those who qualify (JSY). As a result, a woman receives Rs. 6,000 on average.
  • The central and state governments employ the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana – Common Application Software to rigorously monitor the scheme’s implementation (PMMVY- CAS).

The PM, Matru Vandana plan, also asks mothers to perform the following.

  • Breastfeed for the first six months, then start introducing solid foods.
  • Inoculate the child against DPT and Polio.
  • Attend two counseling sessions when the child is between 3-6 months old.
  • Registration is required for the Scheme.

Registration under the PMMVY Scheme

Here are the steps for registering for the PMMVY scheme:

  • Go to an AWC or approved health facility.
  • Fill out the application form (Form 1-A) and submit it with the identity and bank account details.
  • You will get an acknowledgment from the Anganwadi Worker/ASHA/ANM.
  • To claim the first installment, submit a copy of the MCP card, proof of identity, and bank account details.
  • To claim the second installment, submit a copy of the MCP card showing at least one ANC appointment after six months of pregnancy.
  • To claim the third installment, submit a copy of the child's birth certificate and a copy of the MCP card. The card should state that the child has undergone the first cycle of immunization.
  • You can register for the PMMVY scheme at any point during your pregnancy.
  • If you have a miscarriage or stillbirth, you can still claim the remaining benefits under the scheme when you have your next pregnancy.
  • The claim for the third installment must be submitted within 460 days of the child's birth date.

Proposed Reforms 
  • The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) benefits, which are already accessible to eligible pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers for their first child, are expected to be extended to the family’s second child in the near future, but only if the kid is a girl.
  • The move is designed to reduce sex selection before delivery.

Current Status of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana
  • The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), the government’s maternity benefit scheme, has surpassed 1.75 eligible crore women until the end of the fiscal year 2020.
  • A total of Rs 5,931.95 crore was awarded to 1.75 crore eligible beneficiaries throughout the financial years 2018 and 2020.
  • Pregnant women are paid directly into their bank accounts to meet their increased nutritional needs and partially compensate for lost wages.
  • Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Rajasthan are the country's top five states/UTs regarding PMMVY implementation.
  • Odisha and Telangana have yet to implement the plan.

Pradhan Mantri Vandana Yojana 2.0

Selected women will now receive financial assistance of Rs 11,000. To qualify for this scheme, beneficiaries must have an annual family income below Rs 8 lakh, or they should be beneficiaries under MNREGA job cards, Kisan Samman Nidhi, e-shram card holders, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, or BPL ration card holders (partially or completely). Additionally, disabled individuals, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe women, pregnant and lactating Anganwadi workers/helpers, and Asha workers are eligible.

In the case of a second female child, the woman will receive a lump sum of Rs 6,000, provided she registers during pregnancy. Anganwadi workers will compile a list of such women, and supervisors will verify it.

The Pradhan Mantri Matrua Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is India's premier maternity benefits scheme, which was launched in 2017. The Ministry of Women and Child Development administers the Indira Gandhi Matrua Sahyog Yojana, which was previously known as the Indira Gandhi Matrua Sahyog Yojana.

Except for individuals in regular work with the Central Government, State Governments, or Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), or those receiving equal benefits under any current law, pregnant women and lactating mothers (PW&LM) are exempt. Eligible are all pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers who are expecting their first child on or after January 1, 2017.

Women who have miscarriages or stillbirths can receive the remaining benefits under the PMMVY when they have their next pregnancy. The beneficiary must register at an AWC/approved Health facility. When filling out the form, the beneficiary must include her and her husband's Aadhaar numbers, as well as their written consents, her/husband's/family member's Mobile Number, and her Bank/Post Office account data. The AWC/approved health facility can provide you with the required form(s) for free.

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY),  has surpassed 1.75 crore women who are eligible until the end of the fiscal year 2020. A total of Rs 5,931.95 crore was awarded to 1.75 crore eligible beneficiaries throughout the financial years 2018 and 2020. Pregnant women are paid directly into their bank accounts to meet their increased nutritional needs and partially compensate for lost wages.
