What is Nomadic Elephant?

Nomadic Elephant is a joint military exercise between the Indian Army and the Mongolian Armed Forces. It aims to enhance cooperation and interoperability between the two armies. The exercise focuses on counter-terrorism and peacekeeping operations. It involves various training activities such as tactical drills, simulated scenarios, and cultural exchanges. Nomadic Elephant Exercise has been conducted annually since 2006. It strengthens defense ties and promotes mutual understanding between India and Mongolia.

  • The Nomadic Elephant Exercise has witnessed multiple iterations, the most recent being the 14th edition conducted from October 5th to 18th, 2019.
  • Officers and soldiers from the esteemed 084 Airborne Special Task Battalion represent the Mongolian Army in this exercise.

Objectives of the Nomadic Elephant Military Exercise

About Nomadic Elephant Exercise 2024

The 16th Edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise, NOMADIC ELEPHANT, commenced on 03 July 2024 at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya. The exercise was scheduled from 3rd to 16th July 2024. The salient highlights of the exercise are as follows:

  • Participating Forces: The Indian Contingent comprised 45 personnel and was predominantly formed by the Battalion of SIKKIM SCOUTS with the representation from other arms and services. The Mongolian Contingent comprised of Personnel of the 150 Quick Reaction Force Battalion of the Mongolian Army.
  • Inauguration: This was inaugurated by several dignitaries in attendance, which included Mr. Dambajavyn Ganbold, the Ambassador of Mongolia to India, and General Officer Commanding 51 Sub Area of the Indian Army, Major General Prasanna Joshi.
  • Aim and Focus of the Exercise: The aim is to ensure enhancement of joint military capabilities in view of sub-conventional scenarios' counter-insurgency operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate. Operations will be focused on semi-urban and mountainous terrains.
  • Tactical Drills: Salient drills include reacting to terrorist actions, establishment of a joint command post, intelligence and surveillance centers, helipad and landing site security, small team insertions and extractions, special heliborne operations, cordon and search, and use of drones and counter-drone systems.
  • Closing Ceremony: The closing ceremony on July 16th, 2024 was graced by Major General Gyanbyamba Sunrev, Chief of General Staff of the Mongolian Armed Forces and Lieutenant General Zubin A Minwalla, General Officer Commanding 33 Corps of the Indian Army.
  • Benefits of Exercise: The exercise is meant to develop interoperability, comradeship and bonhomie between the two armies by sharing the best practices in tactics, techniques and procedures. It will strengthen the defence cooperation besides further strengthening the bilateral relations between India and Mongolia.
