What is structuralism?

Structuralism is a way of studying various aspects of culture like myths, rituals, social structure, and language. Structuralism focuses on the relationships and structures that underlie the surface of these cultural phenomena.

  • Structuralism sees culture as a system of signs and symbols. For structuralists, cultural elements like rituals, foods, stories, and objects are like signs that convey meaning. But this meaning comes from how they relate to each other within the wider cultural system.
  • Structuralists believe hidden structures shape all human culture and behavior. They argue that below the visible differences in cultures, there lie deep universal structures in the human mind and language, which shape how we perceive and organize the world.
  • Structuralists study how binary opposites and categories structure human thought. They analyze the dichotomies that define how cultures think - like nature/culture, male/female, cooked/raw, sacred/profane. Structuralists believe examining how cultures conceptualize and resolve opposites reveals deeper truths.
  • Structuralists are interested in relationships, not the meanings of individual elements. They aim to uncover the patterns, symmetries, analogies, and metaphors that demonstrate the structures underlying cultural life. The structures are more important than the particular cultural elements.
  • Structuralists see myths and rituals as a key way to access these mental structures. Myths and rituals deal with fundamental questions of existence in symbolic ways that reveal the deep structures shaping a culture. Myths become meaningful when understood structurally, not literally.
