Difference Between Prejudice And Stereotype

Before discussing the formation of stereotypes and prejudices, it is important to define these terms. A stereotype refers to an overgeneralized belief or perception about a particular group or class of people. 

What Is Stereotype?

Stereotypes are often negative, but they don't have to be. They involve making simplified categorical judgments without consideration for individual differences.

What Is Prejudice?

Prejudice, on the other hand, refers to rigid negative attitudes or irrational feelings of hostility directed towards people from a distinct group. Prejudice often arises from stereotypes and involves negative evaluation or an adverse judgment of others without knowing them personally. So, in summary, stereotypes are beliefs, while prejudices are negative feelings or attitudes that often originate from stereotypical beliefs.

Factors Influencing Formation Of Stereotypes

There are some key psychological and social factors that contribute to the formation of stereotypes and prejudices in people's minds:

Need for Certainty and Structure beings have an innate need to bring order, structure and predictability to the world. We like to categorize objects, people and events to help impose structure on a complex reality. This need for certainty and structure leads us to develop stereotypes as it allows us to expect people's behavior based on the group they belong to. This provides a sense of predictability, which satisfies our psychological need for structure.

Lack of Direct Experience

We are more likely to form rigid stereotypes about groups that we have little or no direct experience with. When we don't interact with members of another group, we rely more on overgeneralized societal beliefs and mass media portrayals to form impressions. This lack of genuine intergroup contact fuels the formation and perpetuation of stereotypes.

Media and Societal Influence

Mass media like movies, television shows, news and advertisements play a huge role in influencing the stereotypes that become prevalent in a society. Repeated exposure to stereotypical media portrayals of certain groups unconsciously shapes our cognitive associations regarding them. Similarly, the prevailing attitudes and mindsets within the community or environment one grows up in also impact stereotype formation significantly.

In-Group Bias and Out-Group Homogeneity

Research shows we tend to perceive our own social group (the in-group) as more diverse and socially complex compared to other groups (the out-groups).
