Chikungunya – a mosquito borne viral disease that is transmitted to humans through the bite of a mosquito. Chikungunya is transmitted by infected Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Symptoms of Chikungunya include severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, fatigue, nausea, and rashes.

What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral disease caused by the transmission of the Chikungunya virus. Chikungunya is spread by the bite of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. It is characterized by high fever and severe joint pain in the infected person. Cases of chikungunya outbreaks are usually reported in African or Asian countries, though some cases have also been found in North America and Europe.

  • The name chikungunya is derived from the Kimakonde language, it literally means “to become contorted”.
  • The virus causing the Chikungunya infection – CHIKV or Chikungunya Virus is an RNA virus that is still untreatable by any vaccine or antiviral drug.
  • Chikungunya was first identified during an outbreak in 1952 in Tanzania and was usually contained in African and Asian countries till the 2000s.
  • Since 2004, it has spread to other parts of the world and has been reported in more than 60 countries throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

Outbreaks Of Chikungunya Disease Every Year

Hotspots of major Chikungunya outbreaks appear every year in Asian and African countries. Around three million infections are reported in these countries each year. This is due to the poor state of civic amenities in many of these countries.

The outbreaks in Asia occur particularly in Southeast Asia and India which makes it a serious health concern for the Indian government to deal with.

What Causes Chikungunya?

Chikungunya infection is caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). It is generally transmitted from mosquitos to humans.

  • Chikungunya virus enters the human body through the bite of an Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito.
  • This transmission takes place in an environment where mosquitoes and humans come in contact very often.
  • Marshy areas and places with high rainfall near urban settlements are at a higher risk of contracting the virus.

What are the Symptoms of Chikungunya?

Majority of people infected with the Chikungunya virus experience multiple symptoms related to it. Some of the most common symptoms of Chikungunya are:

  • Headache
  • High fever
  • Severe muscle pain
  • Severe joint pain in arms and legs
  • Nausea

Apart from this, the following symptoms are not very common and are experienced by some people infected by Chikungunya Virus:

  • Rashes
  • Small bumps on palms, foot soles, torso and face
  • Vomiting
  • Pain behind eye

Chikungunya Transmission

Primarily, Chikungunya transmission takes place from mosquitoes to humans. Human to human transmission of the Chikungunya virus is not generally observed.

Mosquitoes, initially, take up the Chikungunya virus when they feed on an infected person, and then they transfer the virus to a healthy person. An infected person is viremic only during the first week of illness. This transmission process by mosquitoes creates a chain of infections and contributes to the outbreak of the disease.

Human to Human transmission happens through the transfusion of infected blood into a healthy person. Chikungunya Transmission is also possible from mother to child when the mother is infected with the virus at the time of giving birth.

How Can Chikungunya be Prevented?

Prevention from Chikungunya is the same as taking precautions against mosquito bites. Various methods of chikungunya prevention are listed below.

  • Avoid proximity to mosquito breeding sites.
  • Remove water filled containers and avoid water patches on the ground as it can become a breeding site for the mosquitoes.
  • For water pots or containers that contain water for any use, change their water and clean the container on a weekly basis.
  • Spray the insecticides on the surfaces and containers where mosquitoes land.
  • Wearing clothes that allow the least exposure of skin and applying mosquito repellents on exposed skin.

Chikungunya disease has no vaccine in the market as of now. Though various vaccines are in various development stages of clinical trials. These developments are being pursued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as part of the Global Chikungunya Vaccine Clinical Development Program (GCCDP).

Latest update on the development of the Chikungunya vaccine:

  • In August 2021, the Chikungunya vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech’s – BBV87 entered into Phase II and III clinical trials of vaccine development.
  • This vaccine is an inactivated virus vaccine and is being developed by Bharat Biotech and International Vaccine Institute (IVI).
