  • Hindu Nationalism: He wanted to protect Hindu traditions and temples from Mughal and Sultanate oppression.

Battles and Military Conquests of Shivaji Maharaj

 Battle of Pratapgad (1659) – Defeating Afzal Khan

This was Shivaji Maharaj’s first major victory, where he defeated Afzal Khan, a general of the Bijapur Sultanate.

  • Afzal Khan attempted to kill Shivaji Maharaj treacherously, but Shivaji used a concealed tiger claw weapon to kill him.
  • The Marathas crushed the Bijapur forces, marking Shivaji Maharaj’s rise as a powerful leader.

 Battle of Pavan Khind (1660) – Bravery of Baji Prabhu Deshpande

  • Shivaji Maharaj’s forces were trapped by the Adilshahi army in Pavan Khind.
  • His general Baji Prabhu Deshpande and 300 Marathas fought to their last breath, allowing Shivaji Maharaj to escape.
  • This heroic sacrifice became legendary in Maratha history.

Raid on Surat (1664) – Weakening the Mughals

  • Shivaji Maharaj attacked the Mughal trading port of Surat and looted its wealth.
  • The raid weakened Aurangzeb’s economy and sent a message that the Marathas could challenge Mughal supremacy.

Battle of Purandar (1665) – A Tactical Retreat

  • The Mughals and Bijapur armies attacked the Marathas.
  • Shivaji Maharaj signed a treaty, handing over some forts but gained the Mughals' trust.
  • Later, he escaped from Delhi in 1666, tricking Aurangzeb.

Battle of Sinhagad (1670) – Retaking the Fort

  • The Sinhagad fort was captured by the Mughals.
  • Tanaji Malusare, a trusted Maratha warrior, led the attack.
  • Though Tanaji died, the Marathas won. Shivaji Maharaj famously said: "Gad aala pan Sinha gela" (We won the fort, but lost the lion).
