Stepper Motor Working Principle

The step angle is the angular rotation produced by a stepper motor per applied pulse. A typical step angle ranges from 1.8° to 0.9°. Smaller step angle means better rotational accuracy.

In VR type, the rotor contains soft iron teeth while stator has electromagnets. PM type uses permanent magnets in the rotor and electromagnets in stator. PM type generates higher torque but VR type is less expensive.

Generally, servo motors are more efficient than stepper motors because they can be rotated continuously at various speeds using feedback control. Stepper motors are designed to rotate in incremental steps only.

Stepper motors produce discrete and incremental rotational motion unlike servo motors which can rotate continuously. Every step of a stepper corresponds to a small angular movement of the motor shaft.

Stepper motor drivers convert pulse signals from the controller into motor motion to achieve precise positioning.
