Working Principle of Raft Foundation

Raft Foundation FAQs

Raft foundations are used when the soil has a low bearing capacity and the load is to be distributed over a large area. It can be used when there are high chances of differential settlement.

Raft Slabs do not have excavated footings as compared to the conventional slab, which has footings.

the thickness of Raft foundations is typically fixed between 150 mm to 300 mm.

The minimum size of the raft foundation is 3m x 2m. Notably, the longer dimension should be less than 1.5 times the shorter dimension.

Using piles with a raft foundation increases the effective size of the footing and thus aids in resisting the horizontal loads. This can also help in a significant reduction of the differential settlement as well.

Raft footings come under shallow foundations.
