Concept:

  • All Aluminum Conductors (AAC) are commonly used for overhead electrical distribution lines in urban areas with shorter spans between poles or structures.
  • They are known for their lightweight construction and good conductivity, which makes them suitable for achieving high connectivity in areas with lower spans.
  • AAC conductors are cost-effective and easy to install, making them a practical choice for urban power distribution networks.

Additional Information Following are the different types of conductor used in transmission line-

1. AAC(All Aluminium Conductor)

  • Aluminium strands are only used.
  • It has low tensile strength and low resistance.
  • It suffer from damage frequently.

2. All steel

  • Strands of steel conductors are used.
  • it has high tensile strength but has large resistance.
  • It is heavy in weight and require.
  • it is seldom used in the transmission line.
  • it is used for protection from lightning.

3. AAAC (All Aluminium Alloy Conductor)

  • AAAC is made out of heat treated Aluminium-Magnesium-Silicon Alloy.
  • It is used in low voltage range only.
  • It is used where electricity theft is common and coastal areas to avoid corrosion.

4. ACSR (Aluminium conductor steel reinforced)-

  • It consists of aluminium conductor strands with steel at its centre.
  • It has high tensile and low weight.
  • ACSR  is used as bare overhead transmission.
  • It is used as primary and secondary distribution cable.
  • ACSR is suitable for use in all practical spans on wood poles, transmission towers, and other structures.
  • Hence ACSR is preferred over other available conductors.
