Primary motives
- Primary motives are the ones that are unlearned / innate / inborn and are physiological. The most common primary motives are hunger, thirst, rest, sleep.
- This mainly pertains to motives involved with our need for self-preservation. The primary motivation is known as Inborn Motivation as it is unlearned.
Secondary motives:
- Secondary motives develop as human society develops economically and becomes more complex. Examples of secondary motives are the need for power, need of affiliation and status, etc.
- More known in psychology as “learned” motivation, this type of “drive” differs from one person to another. Secondary motivation is known as Acquired as it is learned.
