Download Solution PDFConcept:
Uni-Junction Transistor:
- It is a 2-layer, single junction, 3-terminal device.
- The UJT is formed of a lightly doped n-type semiconductor on which a highly doped p-type semiconductor is infused.
- This forms a single PN junction and thus it is called Unijunction Transistor.
- It exhibits negative resistance and switching characteristics for use as a relaxation oscillator in phase control applications.
- UJT is not able to amplify but it has the ability to control a large AC power with a small signal.
- The structure of the UJT is similar to the N-Channel JFET.

Differences between UJT and BJT | |
UJT | BJT |
Only one junction is present. | It is a two-junction transistor. |
The conduction in this transistor is based on the flow of majority charge carriers. | The conduction in this transistor is based on both majority and minority charge carriers. |
It can be used as a voltage-controlled device. | It can be used as a current-controlled device. |
It can not be used as an amplifier. | It can be used as an amplifier. |
