Download Solution PDFGiven:
Total students = 400
Boys : Girls = 3 : 5
⇒ Boys = (3/8) × 400 = 150
⇒ Girls = (5/8) × 400 = 250
12% of boys speak only Hindi
⇒ 12% of 150 = 18 boys
Boys speaking both languages = 6 × 18 = 108
24% of total students speak only Hindi
⇒ 24% of 400 = 96 students
∴ Girls speaking only Hindi = 96 − 18 = 78
22% of girls speak only English = 22% of 250 = 55 girls
Now, we calculate students speaking English:
1. Boys speaking both languages = 108
2. Girls speaking only English = 55
3. Girls speaking both languages = Total girls − (only Hindi + only English)
= 250 − (78 + 55) = 117
4. Boys speaking only English = Total boys − (only Hindi + both)
= 150 − (18 + 108) = 24
Total students speaking English:
Boys: 24 (only English) + 108 (both) = 132
Girls: 55 (only English) + 117 (both) = 172
∴ Total = 132 + 172 = 304 students
304 students speak English
