Concept:

As per clause 26.2.5.1.c of IS 456: 2000, the Lap length including anchorage value of hooks for bars in flexural tension shall be Lor 30d whichever is greater.

Hence, the length of the lap in tension reinforcement should not be less than the development length if it is more than 30 times bar diameter.

Extra points:

Development Length

It is the amount of rebar length that is needed to be embedded or projected into concrete to create desired bond strength between the two materials and also to develop required stress in steel at that section.

As per IS 456: 2000, clause 26.2.1,

The development length is given by:

\({L_d} = \frac{{\phi {\sigma _s}}}{{4{\tau _{bd}}}}\)

where

ϕ = nominal diameter of the bar

σs = stress in the bar at the section considered at design load

τbd = design bond stress

The development length of each bar of bundled bars are as followed:

Two bundled bars

Ld = 1.1 × Ld

Three bundled bars

Ld = 1.2 × Ld

Four bundled bars

Ld = 1.33 × Ld
