Given:

The average age of students in a class = 15 years

The average age of 5 new students in a class = 12.5 years

Formula used:

Average = Sum of all values/ No. of values.

Calculation:

Let the number of students in the class be x.

The new average = 15 - 0.5(6 months) = 14.5 years.

⇒ (x × 15) + (5 × 12.5) = (x + 5) × 14.5

⇒ 15x + 62.5 = 14.5x + 72.5

⇒ 0.5x = 10

⇒ x = 20

∴ The correct answer is 20.
