E-waste or Electronic waste is any electrical or electronic equipment that’s been discarded. E-waste is electronic products that are unwanted, not working, and nearing or at the end of their “useful life.”E-waste is particularly dangerous due to toxic chemicals that naturally leach from the metals inside when buried. Electronic scrap components, such as CPUs, contain potentially harmful materials such as lead, cadmium, beryllium, or brominated flame retardants.

Key Points

E-Waste Components Their uses
Mercury
  • Found in fluorescent tubes (numerous applications), tilt switches (mechanical doorbells, thermostats), and flat-screen monitors.
  • Health effects include sensory impairment, dermatitis, memory loss, and muscle weakness.
  • Environmental effects in animals include death, reduced fertility, and slower growth and development.
Poly Chlorinated Biphenyls (PCB)
  • PCBs were used widely in electrical equipment like capacitors and transformers, hydraulic fluids, heat transfer fluids, lubricants, and plasticizers.
  • PCBs can cause a variety of adverse health effects. They have been shown to cause cancer as well as a number of serious non-cancer health effects including effects on the immune system, reproductive system, nervous system, endocrine system, and other health effects.
Brominated Flame Retardants
  • The electronics industry accounts for the greatest consumption of BFRs. In computers, BFRs are used in four main applications: in printed circuit boards, in components such as connectors, in plastic covers, and in electrical cables.
  • There is growing evidence that many flame retardant chemicals can affect the endocrine, immune, reproductive, and nervous systems. Some animal studies have shown that long-term exposure to flame retardants can lead to cancer.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Commonly found in electronics and is typically for insulation for electrical cables.
  • In the manufacturing phase, toxic and hazardous raw materials, including dioxins are released. Numerous studies have found it's highly toxic to human health and the environment.

So, the correct answer is (A) - (III), (B) - (IV), (C) - (I), (D) - (II)
