Surveying is defined as taking a general view of, by observation and measurement determining the boundaries, size, position, quantity, condition, value, etc. of land, estates, building, farms mines, etc., and finally presenting the survey data in a suitable form.
Surveying as the act of making measurements of the relative position of natural and man-made features on the earth’s surface and the presentation of this information either graphically or numerically.

Surveying may be divided into two general categories.
1. Geodetic Surveying and 2. Plane Surveying.
1. Geodetic Surveying:

Geodetic surveying is a particular type of surveying where the curvature of the earth is taken into account.
Since the earth has a spherical shape, the line connecting any two points on the earth's surface is curved or is an arc.

2. Plane Surveying:

Plane surveying is a specific type of surveying where the surface of the earth is considered as a plane and the curvature of the earth is not taken into account.
The line connecting any two points is a straight line and the angles of polygons are plane angles.
