Given:

The total quantity of mixture = 60 litres

The ratio of milk to water = 2 : 1

Formula:

If N is divided into a : b

First part = N × a/(a + b)

Second part = N × b/(a + b)

Calculation:

Quantity of milk in the mixture = 60 × (2/3) = 40 litres

⇒ Quantity of water in the mixture = 60 – 40 = 20 litres

Let added quantity of water be x

According to the question

40/(x + 20) = 1/2

⇒ 40 × 2 = (x + 20)

⇒ 80 = x + 20

⇒ x = 80 – 20

⇒ x = 60

∴ Added quantity of water is 60 litres
