The ozone layer covers the entire planet and protects life on earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation from the sun.
When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs. Relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation.
It damages vegetation and ecosystems by inhibiting the ability of plants to open the microscopic pores on their leaves to breathe.
It also interferes with the photosynthesis process by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide the plants can process and release as oxygen.
