SCR can be turned on by

1. Applying anode voltage at a sufficiently fast rate

2. Applying sufficiently large anode voltage

3. decreasing the temperature of SCR

4. Applying sufficiently large gate current

Thyristor turn-on methods:

With anode positive with respect to cathode, a thyristor can be turned on by any one of the following techniques:

  • Forward voltage triggering: by applying sufficiently large anode voltage
  • Gate triggering: by applying sufficiently large gate current
  • dv/dt triggering: by applying anode voltage at a sufficiently fast rate
  • Temperature triggering: by increasing the temperature of SCR but at large values of temperature, the SCR may get damaged.
  • Light triggering
