  • Voltage regulation is the ratio of the difference in voltage drop from no load and the full load to the no-load voltage.
  • Mathematically, there are two ways to express the voltage regulation:

           \(VR = \frac{{{V_{NL}} - {V_{FL}}}}{{{V_{NL}}}}\)

           VNL = No-load voltage and

           VFL = Full load voltage

  • The above formula is normally used in the case of transformers.
  • For alternators and power system calculations, the formula used is:

          \(VR = \frac{{{V_{NL}} - {V_{FL}}}}{{{V_{FL}}}}\)

Observation:

Ideally for a regulated power supply VNL = VFL

So, the Voltage regulation is:

\(VR = \frac{{{V_{NL}} - {V_{FL}}}}{{{V_{NL}}}}=0\)%

It should be as low as possible for the proper operation of the electrical devices.
