Upon arriving at the home in Kansas City, authorities discovered the unresponsive child with severe burns. Despite efforts to save her, the baby was declared deceased at the scene, described by police as a profoundly distressing situation.
Emergency responders indicated that the mother mistakenly placed the baby in the oven instead of her crib for a nap, according to media reports. Details from an arrest warrant state that the infant’s clothing was charred and fused into her diaper, with the smell of smoke permeating the home. In the aftermath of the tragic incident, the baby’s mother, identified as 26-year-old Mariah Thomas, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office has specified that Thomas is facing the Class A felony of Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the 1st Degree, Death of a Child.
Jackson County prosecuting attorney Jean Peters Baker expressed gratitude towards the first responders and prosecutors involved in the case. She acknowledged the distressing nature of the tragedy and conveyed condolences for the loss of the baby’s life. Baker stated that they trust the criminal justice system to appropriately address these devastating circumstances.
A friend of Ms. Thomas suggested that her mental health may have played a role in the tragedy. They described the baby as a “very bubbly” child who was “smiling all the time.”
Currently, Ms. Thomas is currently held at the Jackson County Detention Center awaiting further legal proceedings.
