Why Was World No.1 Jannik Sinner Banned For Doping Just One Month After Winning Australia Open?

Professional tennis player Jannik Sinner who holds the current world No. 1 ranking has settled with WADA which led to his three-month doping ban.

Professional tennis player Jannik Sinner who holds the current world No. 1 ranking has settled with WADA which led to his three-month doping ban. A settlement between WADA and the player addresses two doping tests from about a year back. The World Anti-Doping Agency attempted for WADA initially wanted to enforce a one-year ban before contesting the decision made by the International Tennis Integrity Agency which granted Sinner a clean bill of health due to accidental contamination.

This case had been hanging over me now for nearly a year and the process still had a long time to run with a decision maybe only at the end of the year,” Sinner, who won the Australian Open in January, said in a statement.

“I have always accepted that I am responsible for my team and realise WADA’s strict rules are an important protection for the sport I love. On that basis I have accepted WADA’s offer to resolve these proceedings on the basis of a three-month sanction.”

Sinner explained to authorities through his account how his positive drug test for Clostebol traces came from cleaning his body using medication that belonged to his trainer. A trainer applied the prohibited substance to his finger before performing the massage on Sinner. From April 2024 til January 2025, he won 7 titles, including 2 Grand Slams. Halle, Cincinnati, US Open, Shanghai, ATP Finals, Davis Cup with team Italy and Australian Open.


The timing of the three-month suspension benefits the tennis player since it leaves him able to participate inthe Grand Slam competition. Sinner will be able to enter the French Open starting on May 25 because of his three-month ban period. Three months after filing their appeal at CAS Lausanne WADA formally withdrew the original case submitted to the organization based in Canada.
