Shakib Al Hasan Uncertain About Participation In Upcoming ODI Series Against Afghanistan

Shakib Al Hasan is uncertain about playing in the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, awaiting clarity from the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan indicated that he is in the dark as far as taking part in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, scheduled in UAE from November 6.

Shakib, who desired to play his last Test at home against South Africa while announcing his retirement from Tests and T20Is during the Kanpur Test against India in September, did not return home to feature against the Proteas due to security reasons.

Shakib, who was accused in a murder case during the unrest that led to the fall of the government while playing the Test series against India, continued playing the series as BCB allowed him to play for the national team until he was proven guilty.

The board had also assured that Shakib wouldn’t face any trouble if he were to return to Bangladesh to play against South Africa though later changed their stance to make sure that no untoward incident took place during the Test series as they were skeptical more so after the ICC Women’s World Cup was shifted from Bangladesh to UAE.

While Shakib announced his retirement from the shorter and longer format of the game, he was eyeing the Champions Trophy next year to finish his international career. As a result, he was expected to feature in the ODI series against Afghanistan as well as in the following ODI series against West Indies to prepare for the global event.

However, Shakib said that he is yet not informed by the board regarding his next move. “How I can tell (whether I will be playing the ODIs against Afghanistan or not) BCB should tell about it,” Shakib told Cricbuzz on Monday.

It is learned that he is ready to play for Bangladesh if selected, although certain sections believe that it would not be wise to pick him given he keeps joining the team from overseas. Members of the BCB’s selection panel confirmed to Cricbuzz that they are not sure whether they can pick Shakib or not as they are yet to receive any kind of information in this regard from the BCB high-ups, who are expected to make the last call.
