IND Vs AFG: Afghanistan Coach Jonathan Trott Hits Back At Super Over Rules

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott has hit back at the Super Over rules confusion and spoke about the situation related to Rohit Sharma

The occurrence of a double Super Over in international cricket is unprecedented. In the match between India and Afghanistan on Wednesday, confusion arose over rules that were not clarified in a timely manner.

The decision by India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, to retire hurt (or retired out) before the conclusion of the first Super Over sparked a significant debate, with even Afghanistan coach Johnathan Trott expressing his confusion. Following the match, Trott disclosed that there was minimal communication between the players and officials, especially considering the need for a second Super Over.

Speaking to the media after the match, Trott highlighted that the introduction of new rules was surprising, given that a double Super Over had never been played before.

“I have no idea (whether Rohit retired hurt or out). Has there ever been two Super Overs? That’s what I am trying to say. We keep setting these new rules. What I am trying to say is we kept testing the rules, we kept testing the guidelines,” said Trott in the post-match press meet.

Lack of Communication

Trott also disclosed that there was a lack of proper communication regarding the restriction on using the same bowlers in both Super Overs. The Afghanistan team was unaware of this rule, and they had intended to utilize Azmatullah Omarzai again in the second Super Over.

However, he became ineligible as he had already bowled in the first Super Over.

“It was not communicated (the rule). We wanted Azmat to bowl the second over again, but Fareed (Ahmad) bowled a great over. But these things will be explained and done in writing in the future.

“If those are the rules, that’s great. I just think we had a good game, and I don’t think that (rules) should be the talking point,”

It’s worth noting that the Super Over rules have been in effect since 2019, and officials are not obligated to provide reminders unless explicitly requested. Teams are expected to be familiar with the rules and regulations governing Super Overs, and it is their responsibility to seek clarification if needed.
