It was a thrilling clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) produced a clinical all-round performance to hand Gujarat Titans (GT) a rare home defeat in the 2025 IPL season. The victory marks LSG’s consecutive win over GT, including both league matches this year, overturning the early dominance GT held in the head-to-head rivalry with four straight wins in previous seasons.
Batting first LSG set a huge target of 235 but Gujarat Titans fell short of 33 runs and couldn’t complete the chase.
However, it was the early dismissals of GT’s dangerous top three – Sai Sudharsan (21), Shubman Gill (35), and Buttler (33) – that really swung the momentum in LSG’s favour. None of the trio could get going, falling to mistimed shots under pressure.
Will O’Rourke stepped in with timely breakthroughs, removing both Rutherford and Rahul Tewatia, who had just started to build momentum. That double blow dented GT’s hopes of a successful chase.
After the match, Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill reflected on the loss and mentioned about how the team wants to get back the momentum before playoffs start.
“We gave 15-20 extra. If we’d stopped them at 210-220 it would’ve been better, that was a huge difference. (Was bowling first just to test things out before the playoffs?) No, honestly. We bowled well in the powerplay, yes, we didn’t get wickets. But they scored 180 in the next 14 overs which was a lot. We were right in the game till the 17th over. Shahrukh and Rutherford batted well. Getting momentum back will be key in the next game.”
Gujarat didn’t fold quietly. Sherfane Rutherford (38) and Shahrukh Khan (57) showcased the firepower of GT’s middle order, an area often questioned this season. Rutherford played with authority, while SRK struck some audacious strokes to take the fight to LSG, briefly turning the pressure back on the visitors.
