Migrant Killed In Haryana Over Suspicion Of Eating Beef; 5 Arrested, Including 2 Minors

Reacting to the incident, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini condemned the lynching, calling it “unfortunate.”

A migrant worker from West Bengal, identified as Sabir Malik, was allegedly beaten to death by members of a cow vigilante group in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana district on August 27, over suspicions that he had eaten beef, according to a reports. Five individuals, including two minors, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Details of the Attack

Police reports state that Malik, who lived in a shanty near Bandhra village and collected waste for a living, was lured to a shop under the pretext of buying empty plastic bottles. Upon arrival, the accused—Abhishek, Mohit, Ravinder, Kamaljit, and Sahil—began to attack him. Despite intervention from locals, the group moved Malik to another location and assaulted him again, resulting in his death.

Lynching Incident Condemned by Haryana CM

Reacting to the incident, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini condemned the lynching, calling it “unfortunate.” He highlighted the deep respect for cows in the state but emphasized that mob lynching was not justifiable. “Mob lynching is not the right thing. But there is great respect for cows… I stress that such incidents of lynching are unfortunate and should not happen,” Saini remarked.

Rising Vigilante Violence in Haryana

Haryana has witnessed a rise in mob violence and lynchings by cow vigilante groups in recent years. Earlier in 2023, two Muslim men from Rajasthan—Nasir and Junaid—were abducted and burned to death in a car in Haryana’s Bhiwani district. The brutal murders caused nationwide outrage, and Monu Manesar, a Bajrang Dal member and cow vigilante leader, along with 20 others, were booked for the crime. A case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against the accused in Malik’s lynching.
