India Blocks Zakir Naik’s ‘X’ Account Following Backlash Over Controversial Pakistan Tour

Zakir Naik, who currently resides in Malaysia, will deliver lectures in major cities like Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi over a month.

India has taken action to block controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik’s ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) account in the country, limiting his social media presence. This move came soon after Pakistan gave Naik a warm reception, sparking fresh diplomatic tensions. Naik, who is wanted by Indian authorities on charges of money laundering and spreading extremism, has been welcomed by Pakistan for a month-long visit, drawing sharp criticism from India.

India Condemns Naik’s Reception In Pakistan

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed strong disapproval of Pakistan’s decision to host Zakir Naik. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal voiced India’s concerns, stating, “We have noted that Zakir Naik has been warmly welcomed in Pakistan. This is disappointing and condemnable, but not surprising.”

India’s disappointment stems from Naik’s fugitive status and his history of inflammatory speeches. Naik has been wanted by India since 2016, following accusations of influencing terror-related activities. One of the attackers in the Dhaka terror attack confessed to being motivated by Naik’s speeches.

Zakir Naik’s Visit To Pakistan

Naik arrived in Pakistan on October 1, accepting an invitation from the Pakistani government. This is his first visit to the country in over 30 years. Naik, who currently resides in Malaysia, will deliver lectures in major cities like Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi over a month.

Upon his arrival, Naik was given a red-carpet welcome and even met with Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif. Reports indicate that Sharif praised Naik’s work, calling his lectures “insightful and impactful.” This high-level reception has raised concerns in India, given Naik’s controversial background.

India’s Strong Reaction

India has responded strongly to Naik’s reception in Pakistan, expressing its disappointment over how a fugitive has been treated like a state guest. Indian officials believe that Pakistan is using Naik to promote radical ideas, and his presence poses a threat to regional peace.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs also emphasized that this is not the first time Pakistan has supported individuals who have faced serious legal charges. According to sources, this move further complicates the already tense relationship between India and Pakistan.

Who is Zakir Naik?

Zakir Naik is an Islamic preacher who became widely known for his religious sermons, which critics say promote extremism. He has been living in Malaysia since 2016 after fleeing India, where he faces charges related to money laundering and inciting violence through hate speech. Naik’s sermons have been linked to extremist activities, including the 2016 Dhaka terror attack. India has repeatedly sought his extradition, but Malaysia has yet to agree to the request.

In response to his presence in Pakistan, India has taken steps to block Naik’s ‘X’ account, preventing his influence from spreading through social media.
