IMD Weather Update: Severe Cold And Dense Fog Expected In North India! Check Forecast For Other States

Weather across India is experiencing frequent changes due to a western disturbance. Some regions are facing severe cold and dense fog, while others are dealing with rain that is increasing the chill.

Due to the western disturbance in the country, the weather is changing frequently. While severe cold and dense fog have left people in distress in some regions, rain has increased the chill in others. There is an alert for rain and snowfall in the hilly areas, with a significant drop in temperatures expected. Dense fog has also covered many states, leading to zero visibility in some places. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for the weather in North India until January 19.

Heavy Rain Expected In Several States

On January 16, rain is expected in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand due to the influence of the western disturbance. Light rain or drizzle is likely in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and eastern Rajasthan. Himachal Pradesh and western Rajasthan will experience rain with thunderstorms between January 16 and 17. A new western disturbance will impact the western Himalayan region from January 18, leading to more rain. The Nicobar Islands are also likely to see rain on January 16. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry on January 18-19, and in Kerala on January 19, along with thunderstorms and lightning.

Dense Fog Warning Issued

IMD has issued a warning for dense fog in northwest India for the next 4-5 days. In the last 24 hours, dense to very dense fog was reported in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, western Madhya Pradesh, and Meghalaya. In many places, visibility was recorded as zero, including Karnal (Haryana), Safdarjung and Palam (Delhi), Churu (Rajasthan), Gwalior (MP), and Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh). Dense fog is likely to persist in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from January 16-17, while heavy fog will affect Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh on January 16. A cold day warning is in place for several northeastern states and central India until January 18.

Temperature Forecast

The minimum temperature in Punjab’s Amritsar was recorded at 2.8°C. Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh have temperatures ranging from -1°C to 4°C. North-western India is expected to see temperatures between 5°C and 10°C, while central and eastern India will experience temperatures between 10°C and 15°C. There will be a slight increase in minimum temperatures in north-western India over the next 5 days, while no significant change is expected in eastern and western India.

Rain Alert for Delhi NCR

According to weather forecasts for Delhi NCR, there was a drop of up to 3 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures over the last day. The maximum temperature is expected to be between 18 to 21 degrees Celsius while the minimum will be around 6 to 7 degrees Celsius. Dense fog covered Safdarjung and Palam airports as clouds lingered over the capital on January 15 with light rain possible at night. Similar weather conditions are expected on January 16 with morning drizzle likely. Most areas will experience moderate to dense fog during this time but clear weather is anticipated on January 17-18 with thick haze persisting.
