How Did Delhi IAS Coaching Centre’s Basement Flood? Police Investigate Two Theories

The police and fire department are investigating two theories: one suggesting that high water pressure from the flooded road broke the steel sheds, causing the basement to flood and trap the students, and another considering if the gate was opened to let a car out, allowing water to enter the basement.

IAS Aspirants Dead: Three students lost their lives due to flooding in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar area early on Sunday. The police are investigating how the water infiltrated the basement, which the coaching institute used as a library.

Initial probe indicates that the basement, situated about eight feet below ground level, contained a library where several students were present on Saturday evening.

Sources revealed that the gate of the coaching center was closed after heavy rain. A steel shed is installed at the entrance to the coaching center to prevent water from entering the area.

The police and fire department are investigating two theories regarding how the basement flooded. One theory suggests that the rainwater filled the road with such high pressure that it broke the steel sheds, causing the basement to flood and trapping the students.

The police are also examining whether the gate was opened to let a car out, allowing water to enter the basement. On Sunday, the owner and the coordinator of the coaching center were arrested and charged with culpable homicide and negligence. The victims have been identified as Tania Soni (25), Shreya Yadav (25), and Nevin Dalwin (28).

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has ordered action against all coaching centers in the city operating from the basements of buildings, stating that such centers violate building bye-laws and do not meet safety standards.
