Ghaziabad Traffic Police To Restrict Delhi-Meerut Expressway Lane For Kanwariyas From Today; Heavy Vehicles Banned

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sachidanand said that from Saturday night, the Meerut-Delhi lane will be open only for devotees participating in the Kanwar Yatra.

Ghaziabad Traffic Police has decided to close the lane from Meerut to Delhi on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway from 10 pm on Saturday. This route will be reserved exclusively for Kanwariyas returning from Uttarakhand.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sachidanand said that from Saturday night, the Meerut-Delhi lane will be open only for devotees participating in the Kanwar Yatra. At the same time, only light vehicles like cars and two-wheelers will be able to run from Delhi to Meerut. During this time, the movement of heavy vehicles will be completely banned.

Traffic officials informed that this arrangement will remain in force till the end of the Kanwar Yatra, which may last till July 23 or 24. This decision has been taken because of the possibility of the arrival of a large number of postal Kanwariyas in Ghaziabad in the coming days. Vehicles coming from Meerut will be diverted to National Highway-9 (NH-9). The restrictions already imposed on heavy vehicles on the three major Kanwar routes announced on July 11 will remain in place.

The route of the Kanwar Yatra in the Ghaziabad district is 25 km long from Muradnagar to Tila Mor, and 42.5 km long from the Kadarabad border to the Delhi-Ghaziabad border. In addition, an alternative route of about 53 km on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and National Highway-9 is also included in this plan.

During this time, heavy vehicles will be allowed to enter NH-9 only from UP Gate and they will have to go to their destination through the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. Sachidanand said that the traffic restrictions imposed on the Delhi-Meerut Road will remain as before. The route from Meerut to Ghaziabad will be only for Kanwariyas, while the route from Ghaziabad to Meerut will be open for general traffic in both directions.

The traffic police have identified 12 such places where traffic pressure is likely to be high. These include Raj Chopla of Modinagar, Ganga Canal T-point, ALT crossing, Ghukhana Mod, Meerut Tri-junction, New Link Road Cut, U-turn near Hindon Metro, Hindon-Kanwani Cut, and Mohan Nagar, etc.

At these places, where there may be a disruption between the movement of Kanwariyas and the traffic, the traffic will be temporarily stopped to allow the Kanwariyas to cross safely. According to officials, as soon as the Kanwariyas pass, the traffic will resume as normal.
