Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has strongly spoken out against the health disclaimers displayed in oversized fonts during the screenings of the action horror film Sinners in Indian theatres arguing they disrupt the viewer experience and artistic integrity of the film.
Speaking to Indiewire, Kashyap stated that these intrusive warnings about smoking and drinking “yank the audience out of the immersive experience” and destroy the atmosphere filmmakers work hard to create, “In a mood piece such a Sinners, these disclaimers such as smoking and drinking yank the audience out of the immersive experience that the filmmaker had painstakingly created, killing the mood and the build-up in the process” said Anurag.
Kashyap also shared how he fought a similar battle back in 2013 when his film Ugly was forced to carry such messages. He even filed a case against the Censor Board, calling it a threat to creative freedom “I argued that it was a fundamental threat to artistic expression. The case dragged on, and eventually, we had to abandon the fight and release it after our film got pirated. A filmmaker uses visuals, music and nuance to create something for the audience to immerse in. And before they could even enter that world, a jarring ad ruins the experience.”
