Filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap has been involved in controversy after he voiced his support for the movie ‘Phule’. For the unversed, Phule faced a delay in its release after Brahmin community raised some objection. However, Kashyap slammed delay in the film’s release but his remarks caused backlash from the community. He has now penned a long note on social media to apologise to the Brahmin community.
He wrote his statement in Hindi, which translate to, “In a moment of anger, I forgot my limits while responding to someone and ended up insulting the entire Brahmin community. This is the same community whose many members have been a part of my life, still are, and continue to contribute significantly. Today, all of them are hurt by my words. My family is hurt. Many intellectuals, whom I deeply respect, are also hurt by the way I spoke in anger.”
He further added, “By saying such things, I ended up diverting attention from the real issue. I sincerely apologise to the community I never intended to offend, but in the heat of the moment, I wrote things in response to someone’s vile comment.”

His note concluded, “I apologise to all my friends, colleagues, my family, and the community for my tone and the inappropriate language I used. Going forward, I will work on this. I will work on managing my anger. And if I need to speak on an issue, I will choose my words more carefully. I hope you will forgive me.”
This is not the first time when Anurag apologised after this controversy. He wrote, “This is my apology, not for my post, but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar. So, what has been said cannot be taken back — and I won’t take it back. But if you want to abuse someone, direct it at me. My family has neither said anything nor do they ever speak out.”
“So, if it’s an apology you’re looking for, then this is my apology. Brahmins, please spare the women — even the scriptures teach this much decency, not just Manusmriti. Decide for yourselves what kind of Brahmins you truly are. As for me, I offer my apology,” he wrote.

The release of Phule has been postponed by two weeks after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asked the makers to make some changes. The delay was caused because a section of the Brahmin community in Maharashtra expressed their concerns about their depiction in Phule. Some people from the Brahmin community even claimed that Phule defames them. The CBFC has asked the makers of Phule to make some changes in the film including: changing the sub titles as caste to varna, replacing some visuals, modify some dialogues and also submit the proper documents for historical references made in the film.
Directed by Ananth Mahadevan, the movie stars Pratik Gandhi as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekhaa as his wife Savitribai Phule.
